The 2026 MLB trade deadline is steadily approaching, and the Boston Red Sox will have a huge question to answer at the deadline about whether they sell or try to stay alive in a weak AL Wild Card field.

But, while that MLB trade deadline is on August 3, the Red Sox might have another trade deadline of their own with one player by July 4.
According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, the Red Sox are reportedly seeing other MLB teams plan to scout left-handed veteran starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval during his final rehab outing before the July 4 deadline for the Red Sox to activate him to the MLB roster.
Red Sox have July 4 trade deadline with Patrick Sandoval
"According to sources, teams are planning on scouting Sandoval's final rehab start in preparation for the Red Sox potentially being willing to move him in a trade," Cotillo reports.
This is a very significant update for the Red Sox, as Sandoval, who has not pitched since the 2024 season due to injury, might finally be back up in the Majors very soon.
But, instead of the Red Sox calling him up to the big leagues once his July 4 deadline to be activated from his 30-day rehab assignment is over, they could trade him to another team.
There are plenty of clubs that would love to take a flyer on Sandoval, the 4.01 ERA starter who's posted a 4.34 ERA in seven rehab outings this season.

With a strong rotation already, the Red Sox don't need to activate Sandoval to their MLB rotation. Instead, trading him for a package, likely a decent one as well, would make a lot of sense for the Red Sox.
It's been a nightmare 2026 season, and with the team likely to sell, moving on from Sandoval, who's in the final year of a two-year, $18.25 million deal, would make a lot of sense.
The only issue is that with his rehab assignment ending on July 4, the Red Sox have less than a week to figure out what to do with the veteran lefty.
This is a fascinating situation, and with teams showing interest, the Red Sox might end up trading away a starting pitcher in the next week if a team comes calling after liking what they see during Sandoval's final rehab start.
