Not only is Contreras leading the lineup in batting average, home runs, RBI and slugging percentage, but his palpable swagger has made him an emotional leader in a young clubhouse.
Red Sox fans are not new to seeing Contreras showing emotion on the diamond, but what fans saw on Monday night after Contreras demolished a first-inning home run was far from the norm.

After clobbing a 421-footer to take the lead, Contreras was moved to tears in the dugout. The first player to come to comfort the 34-year-old bawling his eyes out on national television was teammate Wilyer Abreu.
Both Abreu and Contreras are Venezuelan natives who have been very vocal in offering support to their home country, which was struck by a natural disaster last week.
The death toll of the Venezuela earthquakes rises every day. More than 50,000 buildings have been destroyed, and reports indicate search is still underway for some 50,000 missing citizens.
Abreu and Contreras were raising money on Landsdowne Street before Sunday night's game against the New York Yankees.
