Here is the petrol price for July 2026

· The South African

South African motorists will enjoy significant relief at the pumps from Wednesday, 1 July 2026, after the Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (DMPR) confirmed substantial fuel price cuts despite the expiry of government’s temporary fuel levy relief.

The official adjustments follow a month in which international oil prices retreated sharply and the rand remained resilient against the US dollar, creating healthy over-recoveries across all fuel products.

Rand has held firm

Brent crude oil, which had spiked during heightened tensions in the Middle East, fell back to around $75 per barrel by the end of June after a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran eased fears of disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. Increased global oil supply also helped keep prices lower.

At the same time, the rand held firm throughout the month, supporting lower fuel import costs and further improving South Africa’s fuel price outlook.

By the end of the fuel pricing cycle, petrol was showing an over-recovery of approximately R3 per litre, while diesel had built up recoveries of around R5 per litre.

Fuel levy

However, motorists will not receive the full benefit of those recoveries because National Treasury has now fully withdrawn its temporary fuel levy relief programme.

From 1 July, the final portion of the relief measure expires, adding R1.50 per litre back onto the petrol price and R1.97 per litre onto diesel.

Despite this, the recoveries were large enough to deliver sizeable reductions at the pumps.

The cuts mark the first fuel price decrease in several months and are among the largest monthly reductions in recent years.

Welcome relief

The lower prices are expected to provide welcome relief for households and businesses after months of rising transport and operating costs.

Cheaper fuel could also help ease inflationary pressures during the second half of the year by reducing logistics costs across the economy.
