The 41-year-old left his job as assistant manager at Salford City earlier this month.

He had a brief spell as manager of Macclesfield in 2023-24, but this will be his first managerial position in full-time football.

Bruce, the son of former Birmingham City, Hull City and Newcastle United boss Steve, takes over a club that has suffered relegation from the Championship to League Two in the past three seasons.

The Millers ended the season second bottom of League One under the interim charge of Lee Clark after Matt Hamshaw was sacked in March.

Clark left the club after their final day 3-2 defeat by Wycombe Wanderers on 2 May, and much of their pursuit of a new boss has been led by former England head coach Steve McClaren, who was appointed as the club's head of football on 20 May.

Bruce's first competitive game in charge will be in the EFL Cup first round against West Bromwich Albion, a club he coached at during his father's spell as manager at The Hawthorns.
