The Ford Motor Company is recalling about 33,000 vehicles in Canada for a potential issue with its transmission park feature.

In the affected vehicles, the parking pawl in the transmission might engage accidentally while the vehicle is in motion, which damages the part. When the vehicle is put into park, the pawl might not hold, possibly causing the vehicle to roll away, according to Driving .

Ford said it has already collected 24 reports of property damage possibly linked to the problem, along with nine injuries. The automaker said vehicle owners should look for a wrench-shaped icon light up on their dashboard, which may indicate damage to the parking pawl.

The company said the electronic parking brake “will apply automatically if the transmission range sensor does not reach the park position upon selecting Park,” as reported by Autoblog .

Ford suggests owners can minimize the risk of rolling away by parking on level ground when possible.

What vehicles are affected?

Vehicles involved in the recall include:

– 2021 Ford F-150
– 2018-2021 Ford Expedition
– 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator
– 2020-2021 Ford Explorer
– 2020-2021 Lincoln Aviator

How will the issue be resolved?

In an effort to prevent potentially damaging the park system, Ford said auto dealerships will update the affected vehicle’s powertrain control module software. Dealerships will also take a look at the transmission parking lock and will replace any damaged parts for free, if necessary.

Customers affected by the recall will receive letters instructing them to make an appointment with their dealership. Owners can see if their vehicle is part of the recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number online at ford.ca/support/recalls or lincolncanada.com/support/recalls .
