We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Saturday, July 4, is 71 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

A look back at the 1971 season for the Cardinals

The 1971 season was the first for Bob Hollway as head coach. His two seasons were identical 4-9-1 seasons. They started the season 2-2 but then went 1-5-1 in their final seven games.

They were 20th in the league in scoring, averaging only 16.5 points a game, and they were 15th in the league in points allowed, giving up 19.9 per game.

1971 individual leaders and honors

The Cardinals' only Pro Bowler was defensive back Roger Wehrli, the second time he was selected.

Jim Hart started nine of the 14 games at quarterback, passing for 1,626 yards, eight touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Pete Beathard started the other five games, passing for six touchdowns and 12 picks.

Running back Macarthur Lane led the team with 592 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns. It was his last season with the Cardinals. He was second on the team with 29 catches for 298 yards. John Gilliam was the leading receiver with 42 catches for 837 yards.

Safety Larry Wilson, in the second-to-last season of his Hall of Fame career, tied for the team lead with four interceptions with cornerback Norm Thompson.
