”For the first time in our six years of ranking position units, the Chiefs do not occupy the top spot at quarterback,” the Sharp Football Staff wrote in their breakdown of all 32 NFL teams. “Since we’re ranking units for the 2026 season only, Patrick Mahomes‘ injury was likely a critical factor for many voters, as he received just one first-place vote and even landed outside the top three on a few ballots.”

Mahomes is a two-time AP MVP and widely regarded as being one of the greatest players in the history of American gridiron football. The Chiefs signed former first-round pick Justin Fields in free agency and selected former LSU Tigers standout Garrett Nussmeier in the 2026 NFL Draft to add some much-needed depth at the position as Mahomes continues to recover from a serious knee injury that prematurely ended his regular-season campaign last year.
