Angels GM Shuts Down Trout Trade Ahead of Upcoming Changes

· Yahoo Sports

Los Angeles Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak hasn’t shied away since taking the helm a couple of weeks ago, and insists he will do everything in his power to move this franchise in the right direction.

The Angels approach the All-Star break in a less-than-favorable position, currently sporting the worst record in MLB while some of their best players get looks from contending teams across the league. As the Aug. 3 deadline closes in, Mozeliak told the LA Times’ Bill Shaikin no player was untouchable.

So what about Mike Trout?

“That’s not happening,” Mozeliak said.

Trout has become the cornerstone of the Angels’ franchise throughout his 16-year MLB career. Trade rumors are ever-present around him—especially in a good year such as this one—yet the Angels remain uninterested.

The outfielder has spent all of his time in MLB with the Angels, making his debut in 2011 before breaking out the following season.

He leads all active MLB players with 90.5 bWAR, and is one of just 13 players in the history of MLB to win three MVP awards. In his career, Trout has 421 homers, driving in 1,054 runs while boasting a .972 OPS. This year, Trout has 17 homers and 36 RBIs with a .866 OPS. He has been on the injured list for the past few weeks with a Grade 1 hamstring strain.

Can the Angels Rebuild Without Trading Mike Trout?

Other than Trout, the Angels have plenty of players who would command some kind of prospect capital, and could very well land them players in MLB’s Top 100. Reid Detmers, Jose Soriano and Jo Adell’s names all carry weight, and with the above average season Detmers is having with a year and a half of team control remaining, competitive teams could spend more than they usually would for the southpaw’s services.

Mozeliak said the Angls aren’t looking for a traditional rebuild through “tanking,” but rather a change in operations to make the team competitive.

“The questions Mozeliak asks and answers now are the same ones [Dodgers owner Stan] Kasten did with the Dodgers,” Shaikin wrote. “Can the team deploy resources to upgrade scouting and player development? Yes. Can the team do the same with the major league roster? Also yes.”

If the Angels begin behaving like a big-market team—which they are—they can take a jump sooner than many may think.

“There are many franchises in the game of baseball that cannot do that,” Mozeliak said. “They have trade-offs. They have to make a decision: If I’m going to give you $20 million for your infrastructure, that’s $20 million less for your payroll.

“This place is different.”

Mozeliak has the remainder of the season to infuse that mindset into the Angels, as they look to end more than a decade of mediocrity.
