The Toronto Blue Jays haven't had the best season so far, but they're not out of the postseason hunt just yet. In the next month, there will be a lot of questions answered for Toronto's future.

If they find a way to climb up from their 42-48 record, down 3.0 games in the AL Wild Card, by the end of July and the August 3 trade deadline, the Blue Jays might be buyers.

In such a scenario, how should the Blue Jays upgrade the roster? MLB.com's Keegan Matheson highlighted the No. 5 starting spot in the rotation, thanks in part to their Max Scherzer problem, as the Blue Jays' biggest opportunity for an upgrade this summer.

Blue Jays can upgrade roster by trading for No. 5 starter

"Blue Jays: Their No. 5 starter," Matheson writes. "The No. 5 spot is where the opportunity lies in this rotation, which has been plagued by injuries and is without Jose Berrios and Cody Ponce for the rest of the season."

While the Blue Jays can rely on Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Dylan Cease, and even Shane Bieber in the rotation, that fifth spot is very much up for grabs.

Patrick Corbin is back in the bullpen now, and Scherzer is on the injured list. Add in that Cody Ponce and Jose Berrios are done for the year, and the Blue Jays really need to find a starter for their No. 5 spot.

Upgrading this spot on the roster shouldn't be too difficult, especially since the Blue Jays don't need to land an ace like Tarik Skubal or Joe Ryan at the deadline to feel an impact.

Someone like Freddy Peralta, Robbie Ray, or some other underrated starting pitchers on selling teams would make sense. The Blue Jays only need a decent option in the rotation; they don't need to splurge here.

But, since Scherzer's been banged up, and when he's on the mound, he's struggled, this No. 5 starter is the Blue Jays' biggest need at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, if they're buying.
