After the Hurricanes won their first NHL championship in 20 years in June, the team was able to put their names on the iconic trophy. But on Thursday, July 9, when the Hurricanes revealed the names they had engraved, many noticed that six of Dundon’s family members were included. What’s more, the space for the Dundon family meant the names of some players, coaches and other supporting staff who helped Carolina win the title were not represented.

“Forever etched in history,” the team wrote on X with a photo of the engraving.

Underneath the words “Carolina Hurricanes 2025-2026” on the Stanley Cup are the names of Dundon’s wife Veruschka Dundon, as well as their children Caden, Dax, Drew, Blake and Tagan.

Buffalo sports reporter Lance Lysowski noted, “Joel Nystrom, who played 38 games for the Hurricanes, is not engraved on the Cup.”

The names of the team’s new minority investors Brett Jefferson, Marc Grandisson and Bobby Farnham also do not appear on the trophy.

According to The Athletic, every NHL team that wins the title is allowed to submit a maximum of 55 names to be engraved on the Stanley Cup, and the most common names are usually the players, coaches, staff, owners and front office members. Historically, family members of owners have been engraved on the trophy but only if those family members served roles within their respective NHL organizations, per the outlet.

None of the Dundon children currently or previously held positions with the Hurricanes, and several are not yet adults.

A spokesperson for the Hockey Hall of Fame reportedly told The Athletic, “Hockey Operations at the league (NHL) office in Toronto signs off on the names that go on the Stanley Cup. HHOF is not involved in this process.”

Penguins reporter Josh Yohe wrote, “What a pathetic thing to do. My God. Indefensible,” in a post on X.

“When the cup stops being about the players and staff that helped win the thing, what’s the point of putting names on it anymore?” one fan asked. Another said, “should only be the players and coaches. it’s just gross honestly.”

When reached by The Athletic for comment, the Hurricanes reportedly said, “We won’t be commenting as an organization.”
