So, what’s a few extra days to August 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants, you may ask yourself? Well, for elderly beneficiaries who have to stretch their finances to the maximum … every single day matters. Consumer inflation is at new highs in 2026 and municipal electricity tariff increases took effect this month (July 2026).
AUGUST 2026 SASSA OLD-AGE GRANTS
These are the dates you need to diarise for the next Older Person payout. Image: FileAs such, South African Social Security Agency Old-Age Grants were authorised to increase by R80 back in April 2026, and they will pay out the following next month:
- SASSA Old-Age Grants 60 to 74 years old – R2 400 (up from R2 320)
- SASSA Old-Age Grants 75 years and older – R2 420 (up from R2 340)
Interestingly, it has just emerged in parliament that the Department of Social Development (DSD) has underspent R4.8 billion over the last financial year on grants. By our simple calculations, that differential, split across all four-million state-sponsored pensioners, could pay an extra R100 per month for a full year, in theory. However, it could still spell good news for a worthwhile interim increase in October 2026
UNDERSERVING THE ELDERLY OR TOO-STRICT REVIEWS?
This latest development ahead of August 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants does raise some important questions over agency management. It has put in place strict review policies to try and eliminate fraudulent grant recipients. According to the agency, over time, it has targeted more than 200 000 suspect profiles and saved more than R170 million thanks to the process.
However, these savings are a drop in the ocean compared to billions in unspent funds. Could this be one of the reasons President Ramaphosa fired Sisisi Tolashe and replaced her in the interim with Sindisiwe Lydia Chikunga? The former was criticised for mismanaging the department and underserving the people she was tasked to protect.
LATEST ON SASSA TARGETED REVIEWS IN 2026
Outlook for a sizeable increase later in the year (typically October) is looking encouraging. Image: FileMeanwhile, beneficiaries awaiting August 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants know all-too well of the rigours of eLife certification and eligibility review. SASSA now cross-references all banking data with a host of other government departments and personal banks. Therefore, anyone who has been claiming a government grant that shouldn’t be, won’t have a free ride for much longer.
Worse still, if you are caught misrepresenting your means (income), not only will you lose your grant, but you will have to pay back the money with interest. For those who are reviewed by SASSA, and are able to clear their names, they will receive a deferred payment on a special fourth payment date. However, those who are not, face the option of two different payment plans: One is the lumpsum payback, which is most affordable. But the vast majority end up paying back SASSA money on a layaway plan, incurring high interest rate penalties in the process.
