2 dead in separate Durham Region crashes; 5 hurt in waterfront shooting

Two people are dead following separate collisions in Durham Region on Saturday.

Durham Regional Police said one of the fatalities involved a 68-year-old man who died after being struck by a vehicle in a Pickering parking lot.

Officers responded at about 10:15 p.m. to a collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian in the parking lot at 1105 Kingston Rd.

Police said that a black Ford SUV was driving through the parking lot when it struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was trapped under the vehicle for a period of time. Responding police officers lifted the Ford SUV to extract the pedestrian and performed life-saving measures.

Despite the efforts of emergency services personnel, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the motor vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperating with police.

In the other fatal incident, police said a 64-year-old woman died after being struck by a dump truck in Ajax.

Officers responded at about 3:50 p.m. to a collision involving a dump truck and a pedestrian at Hunt St. and Harwood Ave. S.

Cops said the dump truck was making a right turn from Harwood Ave. S. to go west on Hunt St. when it struck the pedestrian.

Life-saving measures were performed by emergency services personnel; however, the pedestrian succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

The driver of the dump truck remained on scene and was cooperating with police.

5 hurt in waterfront-area shooting

Five people were injured and five people have been arrested following an overnight shooting near Toronto’s waterfront.

Toronto Police said the incident happened shortly after 3 a.m. in the Polson and Cherry Sts. area.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting. Cops said when officers arrived they found three people with gunshot wounds, while another two sustained “other injuries.”

All five were reportedly transported to hospital, one of whom was in critical condition.

It was not clear whether there were any outstanding suspects.

Toronto man, 30, charged with threatening

A 30-year-old Toronto man is facing charges tied to a probe into threatening.

Toronto Police said officers responded on June 20 at about 2:22 p.m. to a call for a person with a knife in the Donlands and Mortimer Aves. area of East York.

Police said that there was an altercation between the suspect and the victim and the suspect produced a knife, then chased the victim and swung the kniife at them.

Cops alleged that the suspect also threatened to harm or kill the victim’s pet.

On Saturday, Zola Zenguele was arrested and charged with break and enter, possess weapon dangerous, assault with a weapon, and three counts uttering threats.
