Adam Schefter reveals why Aaron Donald returned to the Rams’ facility

Aaron Donald‘s recent appearance at the Los Angeles Rams‘ practice facility has reignited speculation about a possible NFL comeback. A video of him from July 10 emerged online, in which he can be seen conducting an intense, on-field trial workout.

During The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter explained that Donald’s visit was not a commitment to return. Instead, it was a personal test to see whether his body could still handle football after two seasons away.

McAfee started the discussion by mentioning that Donald had been thinking about a comeback since the Rams acquired All-Pro pass rusher Myles Garrett.
“Very positive, but also let me see if I still got it after two years out,” Donald texted McAfee in early June.
Speaking about the message, McAfee said, “He was kind of questioning himself,” and asked whether it means his potential return.
Schefter confirmed that the workout was exactly what Donald intended it to be. “He told the team that he wanted to go there, work out, see how he felt, see how he reacted, see everything that went along with being back in pads on the football field,” Schefter said.
The session took place at the Rams’ headquarters in Woodland Hills, where Donald spent about an hour completing football-specific drills. Reports indicated he pushed himself through agility work and explosive exercises to evaluate his physical condition.

Schefter believes the opportunity in Los Angeles is difficult to ignore. “I really think it was just a trial method to see how his whole body reacted,” he said. “I don’t know what he told them about that after he went through those workouts.”
He also explained why the Rams remain the ideal fit if Donald decides to play again. “I don’t know where he would be more appreciated, celebrated, wanted, respected than in that locker room with the Rams,” Schefter said.
Schefter highlighted the football advantage of pairing Donald with Garrett. “Have him on a line with Myles Garrett. Myles Garrett gets double- and triple-teamed. Aaron Donald would not get that type of attention again.”
He added, “It’s an unbelievably attractive arrangement for him. It’s just a question of whether he wants to go through and do it.”
Schefter even offered his expectation. “My guess is, in the end, that he will. Just a guess, because obviously he’s thinking hard about it.”

The Rams have little downside in waiting. Donald retired as one of the league’s greatest defenders, and any return would strengthen an already dangerous roster. If he decides the fire is still there, Los Angeles could enter the season with the NFL’s most feared defensive front.
