Who is Lucas Herbert? LIV golfer going low on Day 2 at The Open

· Yahoo Sports

Lucas Herbert fired a 6-under 28 on the front nine at Royal Birkdale on Friday morning to surge into the lead at the 2026 Open Championship. And the vast majority of people who just woke up to check the leaderboard likely uttered the words, "Who is Lucas Herbert?"

Herbert is a member of LIV Golf's Ripper GC team. The 30-year-old Australian turned pro in 2015 and hit his stride from 2020 to 2023, winning three times on the DP World Tour and once on the PGA Tour at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. He joined LIV in 2024.

Herbert's impressive outing Friday at The Open is probably not a huge surprise to those who have their finger on the LIV pulse. In May, he secured his first win on the circuit at LIV Golf Virginia, and he has four other top-10 finishes in nine events this season.

But while he's recently begun to find success on LIV, this performance is still a shocker when considering his major record. Herbert missed the cut in nine of his 17 prior major starts and only finished inside the top 25 once (T-13 at the 2024 PGA Championship). He failed to make the weekend at The Open last year.
