Arrest made in fatal 2023 shooting of Pickering casino security guard

Durham cops said that a suspect wanted in connection with the shooting death of a security guard at a Pickering casino nearly three years ago had been arrested after being located outside of the province.

Durham Regional Police said Michael Ferdinand, 34, of Whitby , died on Oct. 9, 2023, after being shot multiple times at Pickering Casino Resort near Hwy. 401 and Brock Rd.
Police said Ferdinand was found with gunshots shortly after 5 a.m. inside the casino and that he was shot while on the job. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.
“He was doing his job and ensuring the safety of all patrons of the casino,” Det.-Sgt. Brad Corner said at a news conference in November 2023.
“He was senselessly shot and killed.”
Armed individuals fled after shooting
Investigators have previously revealed that a group of armed men and women arrived at the casino on Durham Live Ave., near Hwy. 401 and Church St. S., early on Thanksgiving morning and fled immediately after the deadly shooting.
Durham cops announced in the fall of 2025 that a minor — a boy who was 17 years old at the time — was sought on a nationwide warrant for second-degree murder in connection with the deadly shooting.
Investigators obtained judicial authority twice late last year to temporarily identify the teen, while a $25,000 reward for information about his whereabouts was also offered.
On Monday, Durham cops said that a suspect connected to the 2023 homicide had been located.
“DRPS investigators located a suspect connected to the Pickering Casino Resort homicide investigation outside of Ontario,” Durham police said in an email to the Toronto Sun .
“With the assistance of our out-of-province law-enforcement partners, the suspect was successfully taken into custody.”

No charges announced
Police have not announced what charges the suspect may be facing nor have they indicated where exactly he was found.
Police said that they are “working closely” with law-enforcement partners and “will pursue all available legal avenues to ensure that any individual sought in connection with this investigation is returned to the appropriate jurisdiction to face the charges against them.”
The investigation is active and ongoing, police said.
