‘Beyond pathetic’: Donald Trump sparks outrage for ’embarrassing’ move at World Cup
· Yahoo Sports
On Sunday afternoon, Spain defeated Argentina by a final score of 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup final, securing the second World Cup title in the country’s history. However, thanks to United States President Donald Trump, the celebration got a bit awkward.
Following the match, Trump played a role in the medal and trophy ceremony where he helped award the players with their medals and handed the trophy to the team for their traditional celebratory trophy lift. But in an awkward twist, Trump refused to leave the stage as the team celebrated, sparking widespread outrage.

Trump Refused to Leave Stage
Last month, it was announced that Trump would have the opportunity to award the World Cup trophy to the champion team following the final, so fans should not have been all that surprised to see him on the stage with the team. However, things didn’t exactly go the way most would have expected.
During the celebration, Trump handed the trophy to Spain, as planned, and offered his congratulations to a few of the players. However, instead of walking off the podium and allowing the team their celebration, Trump stood right with the team, refusing to move out of the frame.
WORLD WIDE HUMILIATION:

FIFA President Gianni Infantino could even be seen trying to usher Trump out of the way and off the podium to allow the team to celebrate and have their celebratory photos without him in them, but Trump just stood there and smiled.
It was a bizarre and awkward moment, and it was pretty clear to everyone that Trump did not belong. One Australian broadcaster could even be heard saying “they’re gonna edit him out of that” after Trump crashed the celebration.
‘He makes everything about himself’
Trump’s refusal to move off the stage as the team celebrated sparked widespread outrage.
“Beyond pathetic. Trump wouldn’t leave the podium during Spain’s World Cup trophy celebration until FIFA President Gianni Infantino pulled him away,” Republicans Against Trump wrote in a post on X.
“He makes everything about himself,” wrote content creator Jared Shult in a post.
“They seriously had to pull him away to stop him from trying to hog the spotlight. Unreal,” added prominent political commentator Andrew Wortman in a post on X.
“Donald Trump does not belong to the Spanish national soccer team and, last night, he took a while to convince himself of that,” wrote prominent Spanish journalist, author, and political commentator Rosa María Artal in comments translated from Spanish.
“He doesn’t even notice that he’s disturbing, even though several are trying to push him away,” wrote prominent German historian, sociologist and author Dr. Rainer Zitelmann in a post on X.
“Trump hands the World Cup trophy to Spain, then refuses to get off stage, despite Gianni Infantino trying to direct him off of it. This might be the most embarrassing thing I have ever seen,” prominent left-wing political commentary account Call To Activism wrote.
“Even Intantino understood Spain should have its moment independent of Trump,” CNN anchor Jim Schuitto wrote in a post on X.
“Was always going to happen. Pathetic narcissistic POS pathologically unable to cope with not being the centre of attention for every second,” prominent Australian sports commentator Rohan Connolly added.
While this might seem like a strange, one-off incident, this is actually not the first time this has happened. Just last year, Trump inserted himself into Chelsea’s trophy celebration in the exact same way after the team won the Club World Cup, which was also hosted in the United States.
