Browns' Shedeur Sanders Preaches Unity Ahead of Battle with Deshaun Watson

Before Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson go head-to-head for the Cleveland Browns starting QB job, the duo hosted many of their offensive teammates for a workout down in Florida.

The guest list included most of the Browns top wide receivers, including Jerry Jeudy, Isaiah Bond, Cedric Tillman and rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston. Even second-year running back Dylan Sampson was among those in attendance. A handful of others couldn't attend. 

Several days later, Sanders returned to Cleveland to host a youth camp in partnership with the Browns and explained why the session was valuable for him and his teammates ahead of training camp. 

"It was extremely important that us as a group, for whoever was available, to come down to Miami," Sanders explained on Sunday. "For those that came, it was truly amazing. We felt a different type of bond there, just outside the facility, outside of these things ... you create these real memories, these real bonds. It's irreplaceable." 


It's not everyday that two quarterbacks who are in the midst of a heated battle for a team's QB1 role join forces to host a private workout during the summer months. 

However, back at Cleveland's mandatory minicamp, Sanders rejected the notion that he and Watson were truly in a competition. From his perspective, he simply shows up looking to get better every day and lets the chips fall where they may. 

Watson had previously confirmed that he was planning on hosting everyone for a workout, something Sanders was also asked about and rebuffed, believing people were trying to pin them against each other. He also foreshadowed the joint workout the duo wound up hosting. 

"If one of us chooses to do something, we’re all going to do it together as a team," Samders said at the time. "It’s not no individual thing. So that’s the thing — the quarterback room, we are connected, we are cool. That’s the difference. Like, we’re all cool." 

It's certainly a testament to the relationship between Watson and Sanders that they were willing to host a join event rather than seperate ones. Sanders vowed at the youth event, which was free to kids, that their individual pursuit of Cleveland's QB1 title wouldn't be something that divides them as teammates. 

When training camp commences next week, though, it will be all eyes on them as head coach Todd Monken looks to identify his Week 1 starters sooner rather than later.
