Zach Morris grew up in Sioux Falls playing YMCA basketball. The youth sports landscape has changed significantly since his hooping days, but Morris made it a point to bring fun and community back to hoops at the Y.
“It’s a great opportunity to make this historic program, get it back to what it was,” The YMCA program engagement manager said. “It’s a new look, a new experience. It’s a whole new ball game here at the YMCA.”
The Y-Force’s ball game is for ages kindergarten through high school, with affordable options for both recreational and competitive basketball.
“They all want to play basketball,” Morris said. “They all see these guys in the NBA. They want to be there and they look up to them as role models, so it’s so important to have an avenue for all those kids to — regardless of their walk of life, regardless of their family’s income — have a safe place to play basketball.”
Morris also prioritized renewing the partnership with the Sioux Falls Skyforce during the rebrand. Working with the NBA G League team helps keep signup costs low and gives young players the chance to watch some of their favorite local athletes play live.
“I’m wearing the kind of same logo on my chest as the Skyforce is, and I can envision myself being in their shoes someday as I get older, and maybe I go out for the NBA someday,” Morris said. “That anything is possible.”
For Morris, the Y-Force allows him to give back to a sport and a community that gave him so much.
“Seeing my shoes where I walked, it’s great seeing it in the youth in today’s society because I know that level and that pathway is there for them to continue playing basketball until they can’t anymore,” he said.
Registration for the upcoming season ends Sept. 16 at 11:45 p.m.
