August is nearly here. That means it's football season.
Well, training camp season, at least. Across America, the NFL's 32 teams are gathering for the first steps in a journey they hope will end at Super Bowl LXI. But while locker rooms are loaded with bodies, rosters aren't even close to being final yet. That means laundry lists of releases before cut-down day on August 30. It also means some new arrivals.

Though the bulk of this year's big name free agents have already found new homes, a handful of veterans are still looking for a spot on the depth chart. Who are the best available NFL free agents?
WR Stefon Diggs
2025 team: New England Patriots
Diggs was a viable WR1 for Drake Maye last season, showcasing precise route running and elusiveness even coming off a torn ACL at age 32. The Patriots opted against keeping him, instead replacing him with A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs. His 2.41 yards per route run (YPRR) were fifth-best among all NFL wide receivers with at least 250 routes last fall, proving he's still got gas in the tank -- even if his off-field exploits may be an issue.
WR Deebo Samuel
2025 team: Washington Commander
It's a good summer to be in the market for the hottest wideouts of 2021. Samuel is 30 years old, and while he lacks the volume of his earlier seasons he remains a useful threat both lined out wide or running from the backfield. While he was used closer to the line of scrimmage in his lone season as a Commander compared to his 49ers days, he remained a shifty presence with the ball in his hands. His 82 yards after catch over expected (YACOE) were 24th best in the league last season.
OT Taylor Decker
2025 team: Detroit Lions
Decker requested his release from Detroit, putting the final touch on an overhaul that dramatically changed the look of 2024's top blocking unit. At 33 years old he's closer to the end of his career than the beginning, but he remains a reliable left tackle who can give you league average performances or better at a vital position.
EDGE Joey Bosa
2025 team: Buffalo Bills
Bosa played 15 games last season, but injury concerns will follow him to the end of his career. He's only played a full regular season slate once in eight tries and has three years in which he failed to play double digit games. That's not something that gets easier when you're 31 years old, but a five-sack campaign in western New York -- along with a useful 13.7 percent pressure rate -- suggests he can be a veteran presence in the pass rush.
OL Mekhi Becton
2025 team: Los Angeles Chargers
Becton's career has been filled with stops and starts. He looked like a promising young tackle with the New York Jets before injury derailed him. Then he emerged as a vital member of Philadelphia's Super Bowl-winning offense after kicking inside to guard.
This led him to Los Angeles, where he underwhelmed in 14 starts and was released one season into a three-year deal. That a blocking-needy Chargers team said "no thanks" is concerning, but Becton is only 27 years old and already pulled off one impressive turnaround.
CB Kenny Moore II
2025 team: Indianapolis Colts
Moore may no longer be able to claim his place as one of the league's top slot corners, but he remains a valuable presence in the middle of the field. Per NFL Pro, he allowed only a 84.8 passer rating in coverage from the slot -- numbers roughly in line with his last three seasons. While his tackling has declined, he remains a viable defender in defensive back heavy formations.
LB Bobby Okereke
2025 team: New York Giants
Okereke heads into his age 30 season having never recorded a missed tackle rate above eight percent -- and in 2025, it was a meager 4.7 in 150 attempts. He's capable of holding his own in coverage, though those chops are declining as he ages. Still, he plays a ton and has only missed five games the last five seasons, all in 2024.
LB Bobby Wagner
2025 team: Washington Commanders
The future Hall of Famer remains remarkably reliable, even after his 36th birthday. He produced a tackle on nearly a quarter of his run defense snaps last season and is only 18 months removed from being named an All-Pro. While not as active in coverage as he once was, he'll bring proper form and leadership to the heart of a defense.
TE Zach Ertz
2025 team: Washington Commanders
Ertz doesn't want his final NFL game to be one where he exited with a torn ACL. Making a comeback at age 36 won't be easy, but he's battled back from serious injury before. He's no longer capable of shaking coverage on long routes, but he can create space and win battles in traffic -- see 2024's +25 expected points added (EPA) when targeted. He'll need to wrap up rehab and prove he can still go, but the 13-year veteran can be a valuable in-season addition for any contender suddenly thin at tight end or in red zone targets.
