This comes after word was forthcoming that the former defender has passed away, at the age of just 66.
Baresi is widely considered to be one of the greatest defenders in the history of football. The Italian spent the entirety of his playing days on the books of AC Milan, racking up over 700 official appearances for the club.
Across this time, from his berth at the heart of defence, more often than not in a deep-lying ‘sweeper’ role, the stopper guided the Rossoneri through one of the most successful periods in their storied history.
Captain and the very definition of a ‘silent leader’, Baresi’s imprint on not only Italian, but European football is evidenced by his three Champions League titles, and World Cup crown.
News of his passing has in turn been met with an absolute outpouring of emotional messages and tributes.
And as alluded to above, amongst those to have made their appreciation for Baresi quickly known were Barcelona, and Real Madrid.
The La Liga heavyweights unveiled the following statements across their respective social media platforms on Friday morning:
‘Real Madrid C. F., its president, and its Board of Directors deeply regret the passing of Franco Baresi, one of the greatest legends of AC Milan, Italian football, and world football.
Real Madrid wishes to express its condolences and affection to his family and loved ones, his teammates, and AC Milan, the club of his life.
Franco Baresi’s career was marked by his dedication to a single club, AC Milan, as well as the Italian national team. With AC Milan, he played 719 matches and won 3 European Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, 3 European Super Cups, 6 Italian League titles, and 4 Italian Super Cups.
With the Italian national team, he participated in three World Cups and was crowned world champion in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, during the unforgettable final at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
‘Franco Baresi has passed away at the age of 66. Rest in peace.’
