The announcement comes after SAFA confirmed on Friday that Broos will step down, bringing an end to his successful five-year spell in charge of the senior national team.

Speculation

During his tenure, the Belgian guided Bafana Bafana back to the FIFA World Cup by securing qualification for the 2026 tournament, while also rebuilding the team’s identity and consistency on the international stage.

While speculation continues over who will replace Broos, SAFA president Danny Jordaan has revealed that the matter will be decided at the association’s next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

“We are having a NEC meeting next week Saturday, and that is where the decision will be taken,” Jordaan told reporters.

SAFA has reportedly spent recent weeks assessing a shortlist of local and international candidates before arriving at its preferred choice.

Little time to settle

Whoever is appointed will have little time to settle into the role.

The new coach’s immediate priority will be preparing Bafana Bafana for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

South Africa have been drawn in Group D alongside Guinea, Kenya and Eritrea, with qualification for the continental finals expected to be the first major objective for the incoming coach.

The appointment will also mark the beginning of a new era for Bafana Bafana as the national team looks to build on the progress made under Broos and maintain the momentum generated by their return to the FIFA World Cup.
