The Boston Red Sox’s farm isn’t as good as it was a little over a year ago, but it still does have some gems. One of those jewels is Franklin Arias, who is ranked in the top 10 of the Top 100 prospects, No. 3 by Baseball America and No. 7 by the MLB.
Depending on the ranker, Arias is either the third or fourth-best shortstop in the minor leagues. However, a position change may be on the horizon for the 20-year-old.
Arias has started playing second base

Arias has always worked second base, as he has over 30 games at the position, but mainly he’s been a shortstop. However, that seems to be changing.
Arias has played the last two games in a row at AAA at second. Why is this important? Because it was reported that Arias was only going to place second once a week yesterday, and yet they put him there again.
What this implies could be big for Boston, as it might speak to Arias’ future with the franchise.
What could this mean?

Trying Arias at second could mean a couple things. First, they want to see how he does somewhere else than at shortstop. He has shown how he does in lower leagues, but AAA is near the majors, so it would really test him.
Another likely scenario is Boston gets their long-term shortstop they want, but they don’t give up Arias, which the media believes to be what will happen. Arias has a good glove, so keeping him on the field would be big when they call him up. Currently, Curtis Mead is Boston’s starting second baseman, but he’s injured with a fractured wrist and is on the IL.
Boston could call up Arias, put him at second, and upon Mead’s return, have Mead move to DH. Mead is an OK defender at second, but he’s not a defensive stalwart.
What does Arias’ future look like?

If Arias is still in the Sox’s farm in two days, Boston has a decision to make. Depending on how he does in August offensively at AAA, and how he handles second base when they put him there, a mid-to-late September call-up isn’t out of the question.
Hopefully, Arias succeeds, and the Red Sox are able to call up a future superstar to the MLB squad next month.
