WNBA’s Apparent Double Standard Questioned After Anti-Sophie Cunningham Sign Goes Viral
Cunningham’s remarks to ESPN, in which she argued against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, have split the WNBA’s fanbase into visible camps. Both supporters and critics of Cunningham’s stance continue to push hard to make their voices heard.
Support for Cunningham has already spilled outside arenas in the form of organized rallies. Sunday added another one outside Target Center, drawing both her backers and counter-demonstrators.
But inside the arena, one anti-Cunningham banner left the Fever supporters fuming. According to a post from Brick Center, a fan at the game held up a message reading: “I Didn’t Think I Could Dislike Anyone More Than Clark, Congrats Cunningham.”
The clip spread fast, and so did the debate over whether it should have been allowed, given the league’s stance on signage.
“Pro Sophie signs aren’t allowed into WNBA games, but anti Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham signs are. I am fine with negative signs, but they need to let Fever fans have them too,” one X user Andy Froemel pointed out.
“These Minnesota basketball fans are disgustingly stupid,” one Fever supporter vented.
“I thought signs with names were banned? I guess it depends on who is holding the sign,” another user questioned.
“The irony of going to a WNBA game and booing the players in support of women-only sports,” another X user added.
While the discussion surrounding Cunningham’s comments continued off the court, Indiana’s five-game winning streak came to an end. Minnesota pulled out a 108-100 win, its 10th straight victory.
Olivia Miles powered the Lynx offense with 28 points on a blistering 11-for-14 shooting, adding six assists, while Courtney Williams poured in 27.
Kelsey Mitchell erupted for 37 points for the Fever. It was her fifth 30-point game of the year and her 14th consecutive 20-point outing, the second-longest streak of its kind in league history behind only A’ja Wilson.
But it wasn’t enough as the Lynx defended their home court and snapped the Fever’s winning streak.
