The Tampa Bay Rays must have believed that they could help get the best out of Freddy Peralta after trading for him from the New York Mets prior to the deadline. Peralta was one of the best pitchers in MLB last year when he was with the Milwaukee Brewers, but his play has fallen off quite considerably upon arriving with the Mets.

But it looks as though the Rays will have their work cut out for them. Peralta struggled in his debut for the Rays on Tuesday despite Tampa Bay’s win over the Colorado Rockies, 9-7, as he allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and one walk in just 3.2 innings of work while striking out just three batters.

Peralta entered play on Tuesday with a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts for the New York Mets. That ERA of his ballooned to 5.37 after this latest start.

Now, it might be a bit unfair to judge Peralta based on how he performed on the road against the Rockies. Coors Field eats up any and every pitcher due to how hitter-friendly that ballpark is. Even then, this latest start is not helping him in terms of public perception, with Rays fans not being particularly impressed with their recent trade acquisition.

“Freddy Peralta is a complete joke. #Rays could have gotten Skubal but settled for this clown,” X user @dodgerhaterade wrote.

“Not even the Rays pitching lab could fix Freddy Peralta,” @ThatGuyAmil added.

“So Freddy Peralta really is trash it wasn’t just the Mets curse,” @LARamsCEO furthered.

The Rays’ pitching development team has a sterling reputation for getting pitchers back to their best. Perhaps all the Rays need is some more time to integrate Peralta into their system. He still is an intriguing buy-low option, as he couldn’t have suddenly lost all talent after performing well from 2020 to 2025.
