More Durban suburbs lose water supply as repair crews uncover major leaks

Water supply interruptions across large parts of Durban are set to continue after eThekwini Municipality uncovered additional leaks while carrying out emergency repairs to a major pipeline.
The municipality said its Water Operations team is continuing work on the 750mm Wiggins High Pressure Supply Main, but what began as a single repair has become a more complex operation after crews discovered several more leaks along the line.

New leaks delay repairs
According to the city, repairs to two of the newly identified leaks were expected to be completed by Wednesday evening (5 August), with work then shifting to a third, larger leak, which is expected to be repaired by Thursday, 6 August.
The municipality said further sections of the water network had to be isolated to allow repairs to proceed safely, resulting in additional water supply interruptions.
As a result, the South Ridge, Cato Manor and Ridge View reservoirs have now also been affected.
Water supply being managed
To help preserve available water while repairs continue, reservoir levels and demand are being closely monitored.
The city said some water supply outlets may be temporarily closed to allow reservoirs to recover, although water may be released during peak demand periods where storage levels permit.
The municipality added that the repair operation has been slowed by difficult terrain and challenging access to the damaged pipeline.
Water tankers will continue to be deployed where possible to provide temporary relief to affected communities.
