Daily Snow Report: Gauteng back in the firing line for snow

· The South African

Friday, 7 August’s Daily Snow Report brings mostly calm conditions for South Africa, even as a confirmed SAWS warning sits on the horizon for the weekend.

Forecasters have also sharpened their outlook on one province that’s been going back and forth all week: Gauteng.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for a cold front, accompanied by a cut-off low.

This system is expected to affect the southern Drakensberg and adjacent areas from Sunday into Monday, bringing very cold, wet and windy conditions, very rough seas, and a risk of localised flooding.

Mostly fine conditions across the country today

Today’s daily snow report shows most of the country enjoying a fine and cool to warm day, according to SAWS, with colder, cloudier conditions in the south.

Elsewhere, the Western Cape starts cloudy with morning fog, and Mpumalanga sees partly cloudy skies with fog over the east in the morning.

Isolated to scattered showers are possible along the south coast and adjacent inland areas. Beyond the weekend warning already mentioned, SAWS has not issued any further alerts for today.

Gauteng’s snow chances are back on for the weekend

TSA’s weather desk now reports that a powerful cold front will bring bitterly cold conditions to Gauteng from Monday, with rain and a chance of snow.

That’s a real shift from earlier in the week, when Gauteng had briefly dropped out of the forecast entirely.

The wider system remains on track for Sunday, 9 August, through Monday, 10 August, with SAWS confirming the highest confidence for the southern Drakensberg and adjacent high-lying areas.

Forecasters caution that Gauteng’s exact chances could still shift again as the system gets closer, so it’s worth checking back rather than locking in weekend plans just yet.

If you’re travelling this weekend, here’s what the long weekend snow warning means for your road trip.

I’ve watched this Gauteng forecast flip more than once already this week, so today’s daily snow report treats “back on” as encouraging, not certain, until we’re closer to Sunday.

Are you hoping Gauteng actually sees snow this time, or bracing for another flip?
