During the game, the Yankees announced that Cole had reached a career milestone with the franchise.

They wrote (via X): “Congratulations to Gerrit Cole for reaching 1,000 Strikeouts as a Yankee 🔥”

Cole is in the middle of his 6th season pitching for the Yankees.

The six-time MLB All-Star has also had stops with the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates.

ESPN Insights wrote (before the game): “Former Cy Young winners will face off today in the Bronx as Chris Sale and Gerrit Cole take the hill. These two are among the active leaders in a number of stats, each ranking top 5 among active pitchers in Wins, Strikeouts and ERA ⚾️”
