What are Commanders QB Jayden Daniels' early impressions of WR Stefon Diggs?

· Yahoo Sports

After the San Francisco 49ers scooped up Deebo Samuel when they learned Ricky Pearsall would be out for the season, the Washington Commanders realized they couldn't waste any more time waiting to see if their current stock of receivers would be sufficient for the 2026 season. Instead, they sought out one of the top remaining free agent wide receivers and brought Stefon Diggs into the fold.

Diggs joined the Commanders at training camp shortly after his signing, and quarterback Jayden Daniels told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Brian Baldinger that he is already excited about his new receiver.

Daniels is asked about his relationship with Diggs and if he can read Diggs' body language. "100%, I think he does a great job of being definitive on his routes. Very much is friendly when he comes out of the top of his routes. Great hands, I mean, he catches everything. He's super smart; he knows cover, he's not going to run the route to get covered. We kinda hit that earlier today in practice; we didn't really talk about it too much, but it's just two people being on the same page and be able to know football and read coverage. It worked out that way."

Diggs, like fellow Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin, is a fantastic receiver. He rarely drops the ball, and he's had just one season truly marred by injury. He's got a few more years in the league than McLaurin, but for Daniels to have both players at his disposal is going to make the Commanders' offense incredibly dangerous in 2026.

The biggest question surrounding Diggs right now is whether or not he can handle being WR2. He said initially that he plans to be the best WR2 in the league, but later said that, in his heart, he still views himself as WR1. So, it sounds like he might be accepting of the WR2 role, but also has designs on taking that role from McLaurin. It's going to be a fun competition to watch, and when the team hits the field for the first regular season game next month, we'll see just how that competition played out.
