Brewers lose player to struggling American League team following Padres game

The Milwaukee Brewers have lost rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt for the foreseeable future following a right hamstring injury.

While replacing him overnight is impossible, the Brewers did their best to shore up the depth on the left side of the infield by adding Ji-Hwan Bae to the 40-man roster.
However, in doing so they had to create space, and that resulted in left-hander Drew Rom being designated for assignment.
Rom appeared in five games for Milwaukee this season, allowing just two runs across 5 2/3 innings while striking out 11 hitters in a small but encouraging sample size.

The reality is Milwaukee likely wanted to keep Rom, but he was the most expendable player on the roster given the circumstances.
Unfortunately for the Brewers, a struggling team in the Athletics took advantage and claimed Rom off waivers after Monday’s loss to the San Diego Padres.
With Rom no longer in the picture, the Brewers may have to go back to the waiver wire to find another left-handed depth arm for the bullpen.
Losing a promising reliever for nothing is not ideal for a team with World Series aspirations, particularly one that has been cycling through pitchers at a high rate this season.
The move makes sense from the Athletics perspective. Given how their bullpen has performed this year, any addition is worth attempting.
The A’s bullpen allowed eight runs in a single inning Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays, which is telling about the level of help they need. Rom should also benefit from a longer leash in the Athletics organization, where consistent playing time will be far easier to come by than it was in Milwaukee.
