Donald Trump publicly backs FIFA president Infantino after World Cup sale plan backlash

Gianni Infantino recently tried to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors, one of whom had a connection to Donald Trump.

Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner (Trump’s son-in-law), was thought to have been leading a private investor group seeking to acquire a stake in the World Cup’s commercial rights.
However, plans to sell off some of the competition were quickly quashed when a number of organisations, including UEFA, spoke out and said they would boycott the World Cup.
After the backlash aimed at FIFA, Trump denied speaking to Infantino about the World Cup stake sale plans.
Now, the US President has spoken about the FIFA president and issued his backing.

There has been talk around replacing Infantino in his role at FIFA, but Trump has suggested that would be a mistake.
As quoted by journalist Ben Jacobs, he said: “Fifa would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing president Gianni Infantino.
“He is fantastic, having just presided over the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented. If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again.”
We have already seen the likes of England, Wales, Croatia and Albania’s football associations withdraw support for Infantino.
Norway have even called for Infantino to resign as FIFA president, but at the time of writing, he remains in charge of the organisation.
