Motorists in Namibia are currently paying less for both petrol and diesel than their counterparts in South Africa, according to the latest fuel price data from GlobalPetrolPrices.

The comparison, based on prices published on 10 August 2026, shows that the difference is particularly noticeable for diesel motorists.

Namibia has cheaper petrol than South Africa

GlobalPetrolPrices puts the price of petrol in Namibia at $1.513 per litre, compared with $1.552 per litre in South Africa.

Using an exchange rate of approximately R16.17 to the US dollar, Namibia’s petrol price works out to about R24.46 per litre.

South Africa’s petrol price is equivalent to approximately R25.09 per litre.

This means motorists in South Africa are paying about 63 cents more per litre than those in Namibia.

For a driver filling a 50-litre tank, the difference works out to roughly R31.50.

Diesel is significantly cheaper in Namibia

The gap is wider when it comes to diesel.

According to GlobalPetrolPrices, diesel costs $1.623 per litre in Namibia, compared with $1.783 per litre in South Africa.

At the same exchange rate, this translates to approximately R26.24 per litre in Namibia and R28.83 per litre in South Africa.

South African diesel is therefore about R2.59 more expensive per litre.

For a 50-litre tank, that represents a difference of almost R130.

The figures show that Namibia currently offers the cheaper fuel option in both categories.

The difference is relatively small for petrol but considerably larger for diesel, meaning drivers of diesel-powered vehicles stand to save more when filling up in Namibia.

What the fuel price comparison means for motorists

The price gap could be relevant to motorists travelling between the two neighbouring countries, particularly commercial and long-distance drivers who consume large quantities of fuel.

However, fuel prices can change because of movements in international oil prices, exchange rates, taxes and government pricing policies.

GlobalPetrolPrices notes that differences in retail fuel prices between countries are influenced by factors including taxation and subsidies.

The comparison should therefore be treated as a snapshot of prices rather than a permanent indication that fuel will always be cheaper in Namibia.

For now, however, the latest figures show a clear result: Namibia is cheaper than South Africa for both petrol and diesel, with the biggest saving coming on diesel.
