The lottery: Here’s why millions keep believing they could win big

· The South African

Every Wednesday and Saturday, millions of South Africans hand over a few rands for a slip of paper.

Ask most players why they do it, and you’ll get a shrug: “just in case,” or “somebody’s got to win.”

But psychologists who study this exact behaviour say there’s a lot more going on beneath that shrug than most players realise.

It’s not really about the odds, it’s about hope

According to research summarised on Lotto.co.za itself, optimism bias plays a central role in why people keep buying tickets.

Neuroscientist Tali Sharot’s work suggests humans are simply wired to overestimate their own odds of a good outcome, regardless of what the actual maths says.

Add in the “availability heuristic,” our tendency to judge how likely something is by how easily we can picture it happening, and a story about last week’s winner makes next week’s ticket feel a lot more plausible than it really is.

The habit loop hiding inside your Saturday routine

For many players, buying a ticket becomes less of a decision and more of a routine: a jackpot announcement is the cue, the trip to the till is the routine, and the brief flash of hope while watching the draw is the reward.

Psychologists call this the “habit loop,” and it’s the same mechanism behind plenty of everyday habits that have nothing to do with gambling.

The tricky part is that this loop can quietly tip into something more compulsive if it’s not kept in check, which is exactly why responsible play matters.

Why a near miss feels like a sign to keep going

One of the stranger findings across multiple studies is the “near-miss effect“: matching three or four numbers activates similar reward pathways in the brain as an actual win, even though it pays out little or nothing.

Players often read that near miss as a sign to try again next time, even though every draw is completely independent of the last.

I’ll admit, even knowing all of this, I still feel that little flutter of hope every time the numbers start dropping, hey! It’s the excitement of it that gets me every time, and honestly, it’s kind of hectic how that feeling never gets old.

Do you play for the fun of it, the routine, or genuine hope of winning?
