Aston Villa Eye £30m Defender To Fill Konsa Void: Right Profile For Emery?

Aston Villa have made a formal approach to sign Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton, launching an £18 million plus add-ons bid for the 24-year-old central defender, according to a report from David Ornstein at The Athletic. The offer, submitted on 20 August 2026, was knocked back swiftly by Southampton, who hold a firm £30 million valuation for their skipper and see the approach as well short of what they’re prepared to accept.

Aston Villa eye Southampton captain to replace Konsa

Aston Villa are treating Harwood-Bellis as one of several options they are considering to plug the hole left by Ezri Konsa, who is on the brink of completing a £51 million move to Arsenal. The England international previously attracted a £17.1 million bid from Benfica, which Southampton also rejected, so Villa’s improved offer barely moved the needle at St Mary’s.

Harwood-Bellis had a spectacular 2025/26 season at Southampton, making 48 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and one assist, and picking up the Southern Daily Echo Player of the Year award. His season, though, ended in controversy: Southampton’s expulsion from the EFL Championship play-offs over a spying scandal prompted Harwood-Bellis to submit an official transfer request, making his departure increasingly likely, just not at Villa’s current price.

T4O honest assessment: Is Harwood-Bellis actually the right fit for Aston Villa?

Here’s the thing. Harwood-Bellis is a genuinely exciting ball-playing defender, and his 2025/26 Championship numbers back that up with passing accuracy north of 85%, and seven goals from centre-back is a remarkable return. Unai Emery demands his centre-backs build from deep with composure and authority, so that part of Harwood-Bellis’s profile fits the brief.

But this isn’t a clean swap for Konsa. Not even close. Konsa’s genuine value to Aston Villa isn’t simply his defensive quality; it’s his ability to slide across to right-back with the lateral pace and positional read of a specialist. Harwood-Bellis is a traditional right-footed central defender. That multi-positional flexibility Emery relied on so heavily? It isn’t in Harwood-Bellis’s game.

There’s a level gap to consider as well. Konsa has operated at Champions League standard consistently. Harwood-Bellis, for all his quality, hasn’t been tested in that environment. Emery’s system runs a high defensive line and demands split-second recovery, and Harwood-Bellis showed he can be exposed in transition, as Southampton’s opening-day defeat to Watford demonstrated.

At £30 million, he’s a long-term project with genuine positive upside, not a ready-made solution. Aston Villa need to decide which one they actually need right now.
