David Pastrnak apparently needed only one exhibition game alongside Patrice Bergeron to begin dreaming about a Boston Bruins reunion.

Several Bruins legends traveled to Slovakia for “Zee’s Final Shift,” a star-studded farewell event honoring former Boston captain Zdeno Chara. Bergeron reunited with Pastrnak and former “Perfection Line” teammate Brad Marchand during Friday’s exhibition in Trenčín.

The retired center looked sharp enough to score three goals, including a slick backhand finish that offered a reminder of the skill he possessed throughout his 19-season career.

Pastrnak saw enough to make a playful recruiting attempt after the game.

According to Boston.com, Pastrnak approached Bergeron and asked how many goals he had scored. Bergeron, predictably downplaying his performance, answered, “Zero.” After Bergeron continued to insist he did not know how many goals he scored, Pastrnak delivered the question Bruins fans probably would have asked themselves.

“One more year?”

Bergeron Quickly Laughs Off Pastrnak’s Offer

Bergeron laughed at the pitch, and Pastrnak soon joined him. There was no serious comeback announcement hidden inside the exchange, but it produced a nostalgic moment for Bruins fans who watched the two stars play together for nine seasons. Bergeron retired in July 2023 after completing one of the most decorated careers in Bruins history. He finished with 427 goals, 613 assists and 1,040 points across 1,294 regular-season games, all with Boston.

The six-time Selke Trophy winner helped the Bruins capture the Stanley Cup in 2011 and later succeeded Chara as Boston’s captain. Bergeron will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November as part of the Class of 2026. The Bruins also announced that Bergeron’s No. 37 will be raised to the TD Garden rafters during the upcoming season.

Friday’s exhibition showed that Bergeron can still create some magic with a stick in his hands. It did not suggest the 41-year-old is preparing to resume the nightly grind of an NHL season. Still, Pastrnak could hardly be blamed for asking.

Pastrnak Closing In On Bergeron’s Bruins Mark

The reunion carried another interesting layer because Pastrnak is closing in on Bergeron in the Bruins’ record book. Pastrnak has scored 420 career goals, putting him just seven behind Bergeron’s total of 427. He could pass his former captain early in the upcoming season. Bergeron ranks third in franchise history in goals and points while sitting fourth in assists. Pastrnak already ranks fifth in goals, sixth in points and ninth in assists after completing his 12th NHL season. The 30-year-old winger has become the face of Boston’s current era, but some of his best early seasons came with Bergeron controlling the middle of the ice and Marchand creating chaos on the opposite wing.

The trio combined elite skill with defensive responsibility, chemistry and a relentless approach. It became one of hockey’s most feared lines and helped keep the Bruins among the NHL’s contenders for years. Boston has spent the past three seasons trying to fill the enormous hole left at center when Bergeron retired. That effort made Pastrnak’s joke feel especially relatable. The Bruins are not getting their former captain back for another run. For one night in Slovakia, however, Pastrnak, Bergeron and several members of Boston’s championship era gave fans another chance to remember what made that group special.

And after watching Bergeron score three times, Pastrnak at least had to ask.
