9 observations from Colts' third unofficial preseason depth chart

· Yahoo Sports

The Indianapolis Colts will host the Detroit Lions on Saturday to wrap up the preseason.

And with that, the team has released its third unofficial depth chart. With this depth chart being unofficial, nothing here is set in stone, but it does perhaps provide us with some insights into where key positional battles stand.

Given what we've learned about this Colts roster over the last few weeks, here are a few takeaways from the latest depth chart reveal.

Wide receiver

No surprise here, but Keenan Allen is listed as a starter opposite of Alec Pierce. But more importantly, the two backups are Laquon Treadwell and Ashton Dulin. The reason that's of note is that Treadwell and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine may be battling for one roster spot.

Anthony Gould is also listed as Josh Downs' backup, but with Gould sidelined, Coleman Owen and Deion Burks are the two potentially battling for that role. The better return man may win the job.

Backup quarterback

As has been the case the last two weeks, this role is listed as Riley Leonard "OR" Anthony Richardson. From the outside looking in, it's difficult to tell who has the upper hand. Both have flashed but have been inconsistent.

Backup running back

DJ Giddens is listed as Jonathan Taylor's backup, but that job will belong to Seth McGowan. If healthy, Ulysses Bentley could push Giddens for a roster spot.

Backup center

Jimmy Morrissey is listed as Tanor Bortolini's backup, while Dalton Tucker is a backup guard, but my guess is Tucker earns the secondary center job, even with the ups and downs he's had.

Nose tackle depth

Grover Stewart's backups are Derrick Nnadi, followed by Jerry Tillery. Both have struggled in the preseason. As of now, neither may make the roster.

Starting linebacker

Akeem Davis-Gaither and CJ Allen are listed as the two starters, although Jaylon Carlies may be the one who starts next to Davis-Gaither. If that's how things play out, I still anticipate that we see Allen early on, in what could be more of a rotation.

Kicker

The Colts have this position listed as Blake Grupe "OR" Spencer Shrader. This is another battle coming down to the wire, with Shrader's preseason performances closing the gap.

Cornerback

Cam Taylor-Britt has performed well and will likely be the first option off the bench to play outside or in the slot. However, the next two on the depth chart, Mekhi Blackmon and Johnathan Edwards, have really struggled defensively.

Starting safety

AJ Haulcy is listed as the starter next to Cam Bynum, as expected.

Defensive end rotation

Jaylahn Tuimoloau and Micheal Clemons are the backups at defensive end. Both, however, have struggled to produce during the preseason. Could George Gumbs or Caden Curry earn more opportunities?
