However, it wasn’t all smiles for Dortmund, as new signing Giannis Konstantelias picked up what appears to be a serious injury early in the second half.

The Greek international landed awkwardly following a duel with Bakery Jatta and had to be substituted after receiving medical attention, with Dortmund now fearing the worst.

“We should be a little cautious today, but we are certainly concerned that it could be a serious injury,” BVB sporting director Ole Book told Sky after the game.

“The diagnostic tests will now take place. Of course, we are all hoping for the best, but we are fearing something more serious.”

Asked whether it could even be an ACL tear, the Dortmund boss replied:

“There is concern about that.”

Book expressed his sympathy for the player, who had seen his shot take a deflection off Sebastiaan Bornauw and find the net to make it 2-0 in the first half.

“I felt incredibly sorry for the lad. He has had a great presence from his very first day here, and we all like him a lot. To play such a good first half and then have to come off because you fear something more serious is incredibly frustrating.”

Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac, who immediately checked on his player after the substitution, was similarly concerned.

“What makes me very sad is the fact that Giannis has been injured and that we may have to talk about something more serious. It doesn’t sound good based on what the doctor said,” Kovac admitted.
