Cade Klubnik looked to be a shoe-in to be the Jets' backup quarterback behind Geno Smith. But after a shaky performance in the team's preseason finale against the Giants, that may not be the case.
"I thought Cade was up and down," head coach Aaron Glenn said after the game. "He made some plays. ... There’s some itty bitty things that we gotta fix. As for like two minutes. Can’t take sacks in the two minutes, lose yards in a two-minute situation. As a young quarter, he’ll learn those things. He’s a very intelligent player. The good thing is they happen now. So we can look at the film and try to correct those things."
The rookie QB started Friday's game and played the first half, going 6 of 13 for 59 yards and an interception, a far cry from his first preseason start when he filled in for an injured Smith and led two scoring drives.
But the night started well for Klubnik. He led a 10-play drive for a touchdown -- all runs including one of his own. But afterwards, the next five Jets drives were: three-and-out, interception, punt, punt and end of half.
"Not exactly what we wanted as a whole," Klubnik said of his night. "For me, they did a great job on third downs. I thought we ran the ball really well tonight. But for me, third downs we got to be better against their simulated pressures and finding an answer, and I have to get us to a play that will work.
"Overall, not my best ball. I thought we did some good things though. I thought at times, our offense was really rolling, and at times we couldn’t get into rhythm and that starts with me."
Klubnik's second preseason appearance saw him go 10 of 14 for 75 yards, but failed to complete a scoring drive and looked rattled by pressure. So, after back-to-back mediocre outings, Glenn was asked point blank whether Klubnik will be the team's QB2, but the second-year coach was noncommittal.
"I’ll say this -- me and [GM Darren Mougey] are going to sit back and evaluate that," he said. "It’s not fair to myself, not fair to him, not fair to us as a team to make those statements now. We’ll take a look at that, evaluate it and make the right decision moving forward."
The Jets' other two quarters, Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook, combined to go 5 of 11 for 38 yards, so perhaps the backup QB isn't on the roster yet. However, Gang Green chooses to go about their quarterback rook, they'll have until Sunday to finalize their 53-man roster.
