The Chicago Cubs are in the midst of another fantastic season. After making the playoffs last season for the first time since 2020, it would appear they will be heading back this October.

The club currently stands at 77-59, second place in the National League East and eight games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. The two teams will play a huge four-game series at Wrigley Field this Monday through Thursday.
Far and away the biggest reason for Chicago’s success this year has been NL MVP candidate Pete Crow-Armstrong. The center fielder has really come into his own after a disappointing 2025 second half.

He is slashing .282/.377/.567 (.944 OPS) with 36 home runs and 89 RBIs. That slugging percentage ranks second in MLB only to the Houston Astros’ Yordan Alvarez.
The 24-year-old is 32-for-39 on stolen base attempts. His 11.7% walk rate this year makes him even more of a threat on the base paths than in past seasons. The .377 on-base percentage is 90 points higher than it was last season.
Crow-Armstrong clubbed three home runs in Saturday’s 17-5 win against the Cincinnati Reds, with two of them traveling more than 430 feet. Per MLB Stats on X, he has joined 2018 Mookie Betts in achieving some rare single-season history.

The statistic shows just how productive Crow-Armstrong has been in the leadoff spot this season. It would also serve as an argument for lineup construction, that being you want to have your best hitter at the top of the order.
Betts’ 2018 season with the Boston Red Sox earned him American League MVP honors at the end of the season. His 1.078 OPS was one of the best hitting seasons of the 2010s.
Crow-Armstrong will not reach those offensive heights, but his MVP case is still extremely compelling given his huge defensive capabilities. His 23 outs above average is far and away the most for center fielders this year.
