Now, the expectations are much lower, but they're still predicted to be at least a top-5 team in the conference. CBS Sports said Kansas State is one of the Big 12's most underrated teams next year.
"Does Collin Klein have a friend in the college football scheduling department? He was able to develop Marcel Reed at Texas A&M last season as the Aggies took advantage of a friendly SEC schedule. Now he's looking to do the same for Avery Johnson in a season where Kansas State won't see Texas Tech, BYU or Utah unless they meet them in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Wildcats are poised for a quick turnaround," the article wrote.
Big 12 expert picks 2026: Most overrated and underrated teams, projected order of finish, bold predictionsTaking a close, detailed and opinionated look at the Big 12 ahead of the 2026 college football seasonWildcats quarterback Avery Johnson is expected to finally take the next step in his career and establish himself as one of the Big 12's best. With Collin Klein back in the building calling plays, he is expected to replicate and surpass his 2023 season. His freshman year was what had many projecting him to be a star for years to come. While Johnson has had decent production thus far, it's been nothing to write home about.
Hopefully, Klein will tailor a game plan to cater to Johnson's play style and elevate his downfield passing. The defense will hopefully be back to normal with defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson and the overhaul of the defensive staff. Joe Klanderman's typically consistent group had arguably its worst year over the last decade. Getting back to their normal level of play will be a huge measure of where the team will land in 2026.
Kansas State plays Nicholls on Sep. 5 at 7 p.m. EST.
