Rivalry set aside for OSU and Michigan golfers at benefit

SPRINGFIELD TWP., Ohio (WKBN) - College football season is just beginning, and one of the sport's greatest rivalries came together for a good cause Monday.

Alumni and celebrities from The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan competed in a golf tournament with fans of each team Monday at The Lake Club in Springfield Township.
Team Scarlet and Gray was led by two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, and the Wolverines were led by former NFL wide receiver Amani Toomer and Harding graduate Mario Manningham.
Every dollar raised will go toward the health and well-being of former Ohio State and Michigan athletes facing hardship.
"Even though Michigan and Ohio State are bitter rivals on the field, they can come together for a common cause, and that cause is to help their brothers who they played football with who might be struggling post-football. I think it's important to show that Michigan and Ohio State can sit in the same room," said Bob Hannon, president of United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
Organizers say they hope to make The Big Game Rivalry Shootout an annual event.
