Right now, it appears that Deonte Banks and Greg Newsome II have the upper hand on the two starting boundary cornerback spots in the aggressive 3-4 scheme set to be deployed under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.

Harbaugh was asked on Wednesday  if he feels "secure" about Newsome's potential role as a starter.

"We do," Harbaugh responded. "He has been very, very consistent every day... we expect him to play at a high level."

Harbaugh's response to a question asking where the competition for gameday snaps stands at the cornerback position?

"It stands where it stands. We'll be moving forward with it, and see where it goes... it could be a rotation, or it could be two guys out there the whole game."

The other cornerbacks vying for playing time are Dru Phillips, Paulson Adebo, Nic Jones, and 2026 second-round draft selection Colton Hood.

Despite his unofficial designation as a starter, Newsome himself had nothing but praise to offer his position-mates.

"I think we have the best cornerback room in the league when you talk about depth and guys who have the ability to play," Newsome asserted.

"Tae [Banks] has been amazing, his press coverage is very strong and very physical... Hood, being a rookie, he takes a lot from us vets, he asks questions, he learns, he's been growing each and every day... I think everyone has been doing a great job."

Of course, with Newsome expected to cover Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens - two of the best wide receivers in the NFL - in Week 1, he made sure to take the time to hype himself up as well.

"I'm super excited for the challenge, and I'll be ready," Newsome proclaimed.

"I believe I am a starter in this league, I believe I'm a top corner in this league," he concluded. "Now it's time to prove it every single day."
