3 Must-Watch Matchups in the 2026 ACC/SEC Challenge

The ACC/SEC Challenge matchups have quickly become some of the most anticipated games on the college basketball calendar. This year’s slate once again features several high-profile programs going head-to-head in important early-season tests. With intriguing storylines, talented rosters, and plenty of national implications, a few games stand above the rest. Here are the three must-watch matchups in the 2026 ACC/SEC Challenge.
3. Alabama at Miami

After testing NBA waters, Amari Allen felt it was best to return to Alabama. This is massive for the Crimson Tide as they return one of the nation’s better defenders. Allen was tasked with the toughest assignments game after game. The expectations will be high for him. This is similar to Philon Jr., who, in his first year, was great and turned into a phenomenal scorer. Philon led the Crimson Tide in scoring last season.

Alongside Allen’s return, Oats has also brought in a talented freshman class that could make an immediate impact for the Crimson Tide. The first of the group is five-star McDonald’s All-American Jaxon Richardson. The six-foot-six wing is known to be one of the most athletic and bouncy freshmen in the class. Richardson does a great job of running the floor, creating easy transition points for himself. This is a perfect match for Oats, who likes to play fast on offense.
Richardson moves exceptionally without the ball, showing that he does not need the ball in his hands to make an immediate impact. Richardson can make a major impact on the glass, consistently creating second-chance opportunities by securing offensive rebounds and finishing putbacks. Defensively, his long wingspan and high motor allow him to contest shots, protect the rim, and bring consistent energy.
Qayden Samuels, another top prospect, is known as an effective shotmaker with solid mid-range and three-point shooting. His ability to create out of the pick-and-roll, attack hard closeouts, and finish through contact makes him an ideal fit in Oats’ fast-paced, NBA-style offensive system.
After losing in the round of 32 last season, Miami head coach Jai Lucas has assembled a roster that could make serious noise in the ACC. Lucas returns one of his key players from last season, Shelton Henderson. The sophomore guard will be a reliable scorer for this team, as he does a great job using his strength and athleticism to get downhill and finish at the rim.
One of Miami’s biggest acquisitions this portal season was Acaden Lewis. The now-sophomore guard earned All-Big East honors as well as All-Freshman team honors. Lewis is one of the best playmakers in the country and will be a key facilitator for this Miami team.
Another one of Miami’s offseason additions was former Georgia center Somto Cyril, who arrives after establishing himself as one of the best interior defenders in the SEC. The 6-foot-11 big man earned SEC All-Defensive honors last season while averaging 2.2 blocks per game. Cyril gives Miami a proven rim protector and physical interior presence who could play a major role in slowing down Alabama’s high-powered offense.
What makes this ACC/SEC challenge matchup so intriguing is how well these two teams match up with one another. Alabama will look to push the pace and create open looks from three, while Miami has the length and athleticism to make things difficult defensively. Cyril’s ability to protect the rim will be especially important against an Alabama team that consistently puts pressure on opposing defenses, while Henderson and Lewis give Miami the backcourt talent needed to keep up offensively. With Alabama traveling to Coral Gables for the ACC/SEC Challenge, this game will provide an early test for two teams looking to establish themselves as legitimate contenders in their respective conferences.
2. Texas at Louisville
Texas enters the ACC/SEC Challenge with high expectations, as the Longhorns remain a consensus top-10 team in various preseason rankings. This ranking should not be a shock to anyone, as they have rightfully earned this place.
Sean Miller did an incredible job in the portal by adding one of the best forwards in it, David Punch. The junior is an incredible two-way player who provides great length, making him a threat in passing lanes. Punch is an effective rebounder who never gives up on plays, which often leads to second-chance points for his team.
Late this summer, Miller received a commitment from one of the best players in the freshman class, Marcus Spears Jr. The freshman is known to be a positionless player who can be a threat on both sides of the ball. Spears will be a problem for defenses considering his strong playmaking ability.
One of the biggest wins of the offseason for Texas was the return of seven-foot center Matas Vokietaitis, who emerged as one of the SEC’s most productive big men last season. Vokietaitis averaged 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds while leading the conference by shooting 61.9% from the field. With Texas losing several key contributors, his combination of interior scoring, physicality, and experience gives Miller a proven centerpiece to build around.
Like the Longhorns, Pat Kelsey and Louisville have no shortage of star power. The duo of Jackson Shelstead and Flory Bidunga will be extremely dangerous.
Shelstead has a great shot-creation ability that allows him to get to wherever he wants. Shelstead is a three-level scorer with exceptional range. He will be a problem for defenses, as he also possesses good strength. Bidunga was a massive pickup for the Cardinals this portal season. While his offensive game may seem raw to some, he has all the abilities to become an inside threat this year. Bidunga is a big threat on defense, using his height and length to be a disruptive rim protector inside.
Their skill sets should complement each other extremely well. Shelstad’s ability to create off the dribble and operate in the pick-and-roll should consistently generate opportunities for Bidunga around the rim. Bidunga’s athleticism makes him a dangerous lob threat, while his interior presence should also create more space for Shelstad to attack and find open shots on the perimeter.
Kelsey has been relentless in the portal, as he was able to snag Seth Trimble. The fifth-year guard is a great glue guy to have on your team. He does all the small things, like boxing out his man and diving for loose balls. Trimble plays hard on both sides of the floor. He has grown into a more competent offensive player. Last season, Trimble averaged 14 points per game.
With the amount of talent on both rosters, this matchup in the ACC/SEC Challenge has the potential to be one of the most entertaining games of the ACC/SEC Challenge. Texas will have its hands full trying to contain Louisville’s combination of perimeter creation and interior athleticism, especially with Shelstad and Bidunga operating together. On the other side, Vokietaitis could create problems for Louisville inside, while the versatility of Punch and Spears gives Texas several different ways to attack. With both programs entering the season with high expectations, this early matchup should give us a clear indication of how legitimate these two teams are in the ACC/SEC challenge.
1. Duke at Florida
It seems that Duke always has one of the top rosters in the country but continues to fall short of winning a championship. This Duke roster could arguably be one of the most stacked rosters in the nation. One thing this roster is not short of is experience.
Jon Scheyer attacked the portal and got John Blackwell, who is one of the best guards in the country. Blackwell does a great job of moving without the ball to get open. He is a great movement shooter who can score at different levels. Additionally, Blackwell’s strong base allows him to guard multiple positions.
Duke was also able to retain some of its best talent, including Dame Sarr. The sophomore started last season by playing below his expectations. As the season progressed, he became one of the best defenders in the country, capable of guarding multiple positions. This season, Sarr will need to be more of a threat on offense to grow as a player.
Joaquin Boumtje Boumtje gives Duke another versatile frontcourt weapon with the size and athleticism to impact the game on both ends of the floor. His ability to protect the rim, rebound, and finish around the basket should give the Blue Devils a reliable interior presence while allowing their perimeter players to play more aggressively. His international experience playing in FIBA and Barcelona will help him to make an immediate impact.
After being upset by Iowa in the tournament, the Florida Gators have retained several key pieces who will make them one of the scarier teams in the nation. Florida’s frontcourt is a three-headed monster that will be extremely tough to stop this year.
By retaining Rueben Chinyelu, Florida keeps one of the best, if not the best, interior defenders in the country. Chinyelu has great size and length, making him a strong rim protector and rebounder. Last season, Chinyelu earned SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
Despite testing NBA waters, Thomas Haugh is coming back to Florida to complete unfinished business. Haugh has one of the best motors in the country, as he is always playing extremely hard on both sides of the floor. Haugh is at his best when in the flow of the offense, rather than being a pure iso specialist. His high IQ allows him to find openings and make cuts to create scoring chances. The senior forward does a great job of putting pressure on the defense by attacking downhill who loves to absorb contact. Haugh finds himself at the charity stripe often as a result.
Rounding out Florida’s dangerous core is Boogie Fland, who gives the Gators a dynamic playmaker in the backcourt. Fland is a three-level scorer who is comfortable attacking off the dribble, pulling up from the mid-range, or knocking down shots from beyond the arc. One of his best offensive traits is his ability to operate in the pick-and-roll, where his court vision creates opportunities for himself and his teammates.
Fland also possesses a crafty floater that allows him to score over bigger defenders without having to finish through contact at the rim. His ability to play both on and off the ball should be extremely valuable for Florida, as he can serve as a primary facilitator or space the floor as a catch-and-shoot threat. Defensively, Fland plays with a high motor and uses his quick hands and instincts to disrupt passing lanes.
This matchup becomes even more intriguing considering these two teams met in last year’s ACC/SEC Challenge. Duke escaped Cameron Indoor with a 67-66 win after Florida erased a 12-point halftime deficit and nearly completed the comeback. With several key Gators from that game returning, Florida will have revenge on its mind, while Duke will look to prove it can take down the Gators for the second straight season. This time, however, the Blue Devils will have to do it in Gainesville, making this one of the most anticipated games of the entire challenge. Fans will be on the edge of their seat for this game in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
