So far those problems have been on the offensive side of the ball for the Chiers, but now defensive tackle Chris Jones is struggling with a bad back, according to a report from Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
Jones sat out of practice with a back injury, per Alper, and coach Andy Reid said at a press conference, via multiple reporters, that the team believes he’ll be “alright” moving forward.
Jones is a key cog in the Chiefs defense, and in the pass rush in particular. He started every game for Kansas City last season and finished the year with 29 tackles, seven sacks and 25 quarterback hits, according to the writer. Not having him would be a boon for Bo Nix, especially on those risky rollouts Nix loves so much.
Jones has tackle company in the bad back department in Josh Simmons, who’s been out of action for over a week with a back issue of his own. Reid downplayed the injury, which is what he does, saying they would both be back for Week 1.
But we still don’t know that at this point. What we do know is that Reid runs one of the toughest training camps in the NFL, and it’s designed to push his players. But it’s fair to wonder if it’s pushing some of them into injuries, given the number of Chiefs who have gone down in camp.
The Chiefs also did without left guard Kingsley Suamataia in practice, as he left practice early with an injury.
It’s a lot tougher to get good information due to the end of the preseason and training camp, but the Chiefs hae been awfully banged up this summer.
The list of injuries is a virtual litany. Start with cornerback Mansoor Delane, who struggled with a shoulder injury during OTAs that extended into minicamp, although Delane was able to make it back onto the field in time to make a preseason cameo that showcased his talent.
Then there are the receivers. Rashee Rice is coming off knee surgery, and Xavier Worthy tweaked his shoulder, which is the same kind of injury that kept him out for a good chunk of last season.
Finally, there’s new running back Kenneth Walker III, who hurt his foot in the last week of practice and had to be shut down.
The Broncos had their own version of this early in camp, but those were mostly soft tissue injuries, and Denver is relatively healthy now. It’ll be interesting to see what the Chiefs injury report looks like when the Broncos make the journey to Arrowhead.
