Cape Town’s Table View beachfront gets major facelift ahead of summer

A major upgrade of Cape Town’s popular Table View beachfront is entering its final phase, with the City aiming to complete the project before the festive season.

The project, which began in July 2022, has seen extensive work along a 3km stretch of coastline between Dolphin Beach and Bokkomsbaai.
The final work is now focused on refurbishing the ablution facilities at Dolphin Beach and Bokkomsbaai, with the City expecting the project to be completed by mid-December 2026, if work stays on schedule.
The upgraded ablution facilities will also be connected to the City’s sewer network, and a new post-and-rail fence is also being constructed between the Bokkomsbaai parking area and Foam Street.
Table View beachfront: What’s been upgraded?
The beachfront project has involved much more than cosmetic improvements.
One of the biggest elements has been the rehabilitation of the coastal dune system between Dolphin Beach and Bokkomsbaai.
The dunes were reprofiled and replanted with dune-specific vegetation, with the City now monitoring the area as the vegetation becomes established.
According to the City, the restored dune corridor will eventually provide a natural buffer against storm surges and the effects of rising sea levels associated with climate change.
Other major parts of the project have already been completed.
These include:
- Upgrades to beach access and stormwater infrastructure at Bokkomsbaai
- Refurbishment of stormwater outlets and retaining structures
- Improvements to the White Waters parking area
- A new parking area opposite Visagie Street
- Upgraded parking areas along Beach Boulevard and Otto du Plessis Drive
- A new 2km coastal walkway from Marine Circle to Bokkomsbaai
- Restoration of the existing walkway
- New beach access paths between Marine Circle and Dolphin Beach
The new coastal walkway is expected to be one of the more noticeable additions for people using the beachfront.
Beach remains open during final works
The beachfront and beach will remain accessible while the final construction work takes place.
However, visitors have been asked to stay away from clearly marked work areas, use designated beach access routes and follow signage and safety instructions.
Temporary ablution facilities are also being provided while the permanent facilities are refurbished.
The timing of the final phase is particularly significant, with the City aiming to complete the project just before Cape Town’s busy festive season.
Table View remains a popular destination for both locals and visitors, offering views towards Table Mountain and becoming particularly busy with kite-surfers during the summer months.
