It’s not every day you come across a 7’4″ player like Zhang Ziyu in women’s basketball.
Team USA may have comfortably taken the 94-61 victory, but 7-foot-4 phenom Zhang Ziyu still put on a show in her limited minutes. Finishing with 13 points, six rebounds, and two blocks off the bench, China’s 19-year-old center gave the American frontcourt everything they could handle.

Standing a full foot taller than Angel Reese and Aliyah Boston, Zhang physically dominated the paint. Reese and Boston battled relentlessly, but marking her felt impossible whenever she sealed deep position.
The Americans had to throw double-teams her way constantly, forcing her to the line where she drew foul after foul.
Caitlin Clark experiences a first in basketball with Zhang Ziyu
Caitlin Clark isn’t often speechless, but you could tell she was quite shocked after coming up against Zhang Ziyu of China.
Taking the postgame press conference alongside Kara Lawson, Clark stated that she’s never played against a woman of Ziyu’s size, but admits that Team USA dealt with her well.
She said: “This was a different type of basketball game that I probably ever played in my entire life. I’ve never played against a woman of that size. She obviously presented some challenges for us, but you gotta give our post players a lot of credit.”
However, one player who looked to be having a rather troubled time was Angel Reese, as a clip went viral on social media of her trying to defend against Ziyu.
Ziyu currently plays in China for the Shandong Six Stars in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA), but who knows, perhaps she could make her way to the WNBA.
