Baker Mayfield isn’t going anywhere.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to a massive three-year, $165 million extension with their franchise quarterback Tuesday, ending months of uncertainty surrounding Mayfield’s future before Week 1.
Buccaneers owner/co-chairman Joel Glazer made it clear afterward just how highly the organization thinks of its quarterback.

“Baker’s arrival marked an important new chapter for our organization, and over the past three years he has established himself as the unquestioned leader of our franchise.”
“This contract – the largest in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – reflects our belief in Baker, and his leadership both on and off the field. His competitive spirit, resilience and commitment to winning embody everything we want in our players. Baker and his wife, Emily, have made a meaningful impact in the Tampa Bay community and we are thrilled their family will continue to call Tampa Bay home for years to come.”
It’s quite the journey for Mayfield. He originally joined Tampa Bay on a one-year prove-it deal in 2023 after bouncing around the NFL. Three years later, the former No. 1 overall pick has completely revived his career and become the long-term face of the Buccaneers.
Mayfield has started 51 games for Tampa Bay, throwing for 12,237 yards and 95 touchdowns while leading the franchise to two playoff appearances. Now he’s being paid accordingly.
The timing also couldn’t be much better. Mayfield and Tampa Bay open the 2026 season Sunday against Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals after missing the playoffs last season. Contract negotiations had previously stalled during training camp, creating the possibility that Mayfield could enter free agency after the year.
That’s no longer something Buccaneers fans have to worry about. Mayfield came to Tampa Bay looking for an opportunity to revive his career. He found a home instead.
