Drake Maye is ready to lead the Patriots back to the Super Bowl in his third season

The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are playing the New England Patriots tomorrow night, the same Patriots team they defeated 29-13 in Super Bowl LX only seven months ago. But is this going to be a repeat of last year, or is the story finally going to flip? First we have to look at several factors, the most important being the two quarterbacks, but another part that stats cannot completely measure is heart and what losing that game may have done to New England.

Tomorrow night gives us two quarterbacks coming off very different Super Bowl experiences. Drake Maye had the better regular season statistically, throwing for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns and only eight interceptions with a 113.5 passer rating. Sam Darnold finished with 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions with a 99.1 rating. On the surface Maye was actually the more productive quarterback throughout the year.

The Super Bowl was a completely different story. Maye finished with 295 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions, lost a fumble and was sacked six times. Even those numbers make the performance look better than it really was because New England had only 48 passing yards in the first half, with most of Maye’s production coming after Seattle had built a large lead.

Darnold was not exactly Patrick Mahomes on the other side. Seattle only needed him to go 19-for-38 for 202 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. The biggest difference was that Darnold avoided the back-breaking mistake while Seattle’s defense made Maye uncomfortable for nearly the entire game.

That gives Maye a pretty simple assignment tomorrow: protect the football and handle pressure better. The Patriots need Maye to avoid the sacks and turnovers that allowed Seattle to control the Super Bowl.

The sportsbooks are basically telling us that Seattle should still win, just nowhere near as comfortably as it did in February.

The market is essentially saying: Seattle is still better, but do not expect another Super Bowl beatdown automatically.

The Part The Odds Cannot Completely Measure

Another part the odds will not completely tell you is the intangible quality: what losing the Super Bowl did to Drake Maye and the Patriots.

Sports psychology actually gives some basis to the revenge idea. Research across major American sports has found that rivalry and an opponent’s previous success can increase future motivation and performance. Previous failure can create an extra motivational edge.

Maye also has something very specific to be angry about. The Seahawks kept New England scoreless through three quarters and forced him into the exact mistakes that decided the game.

Seattle faces the opposite situation. Coming off a championship creates the easy narrative that the Seahawks could become stagnant or satisfied, but that is harder to prove statistically. Championship teams do not suddenly forget how to play football because they won.

The bigger question is whether Seattle can recreate the same defensive pressure. Six sacks and multiple turnovers are difficult to reproduce, and New England now has an entire offseason of film showing exactly how Seattle attacked Maye.

End Of My Patriots-Seahawks Rant

Seattle deserves to enter tomorrow as the favorite because the last time these teams played, the Seahawks completely disrupted New England’s offense and won the Super Bowl 29-13.

But Drake Maye was still the better statistical quarterback over the entire season, and seven months is a long time to prepare for the defense that embarrassed you on the biggest stage.

At Seattle -3.5 and roughly -186 to win, the market is giving the Seahawks the advantage without treating February’s result as guaranteed to happen again. For anyone expecting Maye to come back with a little extra fire, New England +3.5 is where the argument becomes interesting.
