The deadline for some major rule changes in the National Hockey League's collective bargaining agreement are coming including the end of 8 year deals on Tuesday at 11:59 pm. That means teams looking to sign a player to an 8 year contract must do so before that deadline or negotiations get considerably tougher.
The Buffalo Sabres have done just that, announcing on Monday morning that they have come to terms on a new long term extension for former first round pick Noah Ostlund. According to the Sabres own announcement, this deal will carry an average annual value and salary cap hit of $6.6 million per season.
Ostlund is coming off his first real serious taste of NHL experience, a 60 game season in which he had 11 goals and 16 assists for a total of 27 points last season.
While this might seem like a hefty price for such a young and relatively unproven player, there is a logic to this move. The Sabres are clearly paying for the player they believe Ostlund will develop into, and they are getting a significant number of UFA years in this deal as well. Ostlund will be playing in the final year of his Entry-Level-Contract this season which means his new contract' doesn't even begin until the 2027-28 season. That means Ostlund is under contract well beyond when he would otherwise to be eligible as an unrestricted free agent which would have come in 2031.
