Mamelodi Sundowns dominate Pitso Mosimane’s Bafana Bafana squad

New Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane on Thursday named a 30-player squad to prepare for AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea later this month, as well as a one-off friendly against Egypt.

Mosimane selected no fewer than 13 Mamelodi Sundowns players – some 43% of his squad.
‘Jingles’ of course used to coach Mamelodi Sundowns between 2012 and 2020. He also played for Masandawana during his career.
One Amakhosi player
Orlando Pirates were the next-best represented side with six players, while Kaizer Chiefs had just one player picked – as did Durban City.
No other South African side has any representatives.
Meanwhile, no fewer than nine players selected currently play their football for overseas teams.
Fixtures
Bafana Bafana will take on Guinea at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto in their opening Group D clash on Saturday, 26 September at 18:00.
The team will then travel to Cairo for their next qualifier against Eritrea on Wednesday, 30 September at 18:00 (SA time).
Bafana Bafana will remain in Egypt for an international friendly against their host on Sunday, 4 October.
Mosimane is well known in Egypt having previously coached Al Ahly.
The other team in Bafana Bafana’s AFCON 2027 qualifier group is Kenya.
Bafana Bafana are currently ranked 10th in Africa, while Guinea are 15th, Kenya 25th and Eritrea 50th in the FIFA rankings.
