OneFootball x Martin Luke Brown: Any Man Utd success will be because of Bruno

As part of OneFootball's collaboration series with Shoot Music we're interviewing an artist about their love of football.

This week it's artist, songwriter, producer, and Manchester United fan, Martin Luke Brown

When did you start supporting Manchester United and why?

One of my earliest memories was watching the World Cup in 1998 and becoming obsessed with David Beckham like every other millennial man. Turned out he played for Manchester United so I've followed them ever since. My family aren’t into football at all so it was a pretty lone venture to begin with. I've got a whole gang of United friends now though and head up to Old Trafford a few times a year. My sister lives in Manchester, so it’s become a second home since my parents left our childhood spot.

What is your favourite memory of supporting Man Utd as a child?

The 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea where John Terry missed that penalty. Just unfathomable levels of emotional turmoil. What a team that was by the way!

What are your predictions for Man Utd for this season?

Anything we achieve will be because of Bruno. I think, sadly, top four and a cup run would be a good season for us when you put our squad up against Arsenal and Man City - never mind Liverpool and Spurs who’ve spent hundreds of millions this summer. I think Brentford and Brighton will be there or thereabouts too. The standard of the whole league is getting so much better. I’d be happy with third and a cup run. The ChampionsLeague is going to be lovely too - I’ve missed it!

What do you think of the signings the club have made this summer?

INEOS don’t fill me with confidence. I like Carrick, similarly to Solskjær he’s a United person who understands the club from the inside out. That seems to work better for us than the more experienced managers that play five at the back or park the bus. Having said that, I don't think our transfer business has been great and he’s going to have to do really well with what we’ve got. Santos isn’t the complete article, neither is Baleba. I like Tielemans but we need a proper athletic box-to-box Declan Rice/Elliot Anderson ready-made type and he’s not that. We've got a lot of good young players or players that are super injury prone but very few consistent performers beyond Bruno.

Which player do you think will have the biggest impact this season?

Obviously Bruno. I really hope Rashford has a renaissance - he’s a proper Manc and it would be so romantic. I really like Cunha but I think as ever, Bruno is the guy!
